How do I know if my smoke detector is recalled or on a CPSC warning?

Turn the alarm over and find the brand and model number on the label on the back. Then compare it with the CPSC notices for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. There are two kinds. A recall means the company agreed to a fix, usually a refund or a replacement alarm, and the notice often says to keep the old alarm up until the new one is installed. A warning means CPSC tested the alarm, found it can fail, and the seller did not agree to a recall, so CPSC tells you to stop using it and dispose of it, and lists no refund.

Many warned alarms were sold on Amazon and eBay under several brand names for the same model, so the model number matters more than the brand.

Vigil compares your label with the CPSC notices we keep and links each one.
