What items can no longer be bought with SNAP in South Carolina?
From 2026-11-01, SNAP in South Carolina no longer covers candy, energy drinks, soft drinks and other sweetened drinks, under a USDA waiver. Soft drinks are carbonated drinks with more than 5 grams of sugar or sweetener; the state says diet and zero sugar soft drinks stay covered. Energy drinks are those with 65 mg or more of caffeine per 8 ounces, not coffee or tea. Candy means sweetened bars, drops or pieces; protein and granola bars, baking items and bakery items are not candy.
Stores have a 90-day grace period from the start date. After it, a first finding brings a warning letter and a second can mean removal from SNAP, per the USDA retailer memo as reported by NACS.
