Store owners: 12 states cut soda and candy from food stamps (SNAP).

Each state has its own soda and candy rules, and most give stores no item list. Owners check items one by one and guess. After a 90-day grace period, a store gets a warning letter, then can lose SNAP.

Where to get the item list from your register
  1. Most registers export the item list (often called the item file) as a CSV or Excel file from the back office: look for Items or Products, then Export.
  2. Keep the barcode (UPC) column, the item name and the department. If the file has an EBT or SNAP column, Uncheck shows which restricted items are still switched on.
  3. Drop the file here as it is. Column names are found for you.

Departments to uncheck

Whole department: switch off EBT for all of it, then back on for anything the label clears.

How Uncheck works

How it works

Your files are opened in this browser and never leave it. If you add your state's barcode file, items whose barcode is on it are marked restricted (leading zeros and the last check digit are matched either way). Every other item is read by its name and department against your state's written rules: soda, diet soda, energy drinks, sweet tea and lemonade, sports drinks, juice drinks, candy (with the flour and refrigeration rules where your state has them) and desserts. A name match is marked likely restricted, check the label, or no rule matched; an item is called covered only where the state's own rule says so (for example 100% juice). Only the label (sugar, juice percent, caffeine, flour) settles the hard cases.

Uncheck is not USDA, a state agency or a register maker, and the store stays responsible for what it rings up. Help: grapnel.team@gmail.com
